NEWBIE-ALERT...

I've just installed Caldera OpenLinux 2.2 (what a breeze!!), but have window
problems (nah, not M$ Windoze this time!!!)...

I've only got a 14" monitor and cheapo graphics card and the auto install
wouldn't let me choose 1024x768 resolution (like  Windoze does), which would
have been my choice (yes, I've got good eye sight!), so I'm stuck with a
lesser one - find I thought, until my big problem...

I can't see half of virtually EVERY window that pops up - when I try and
re-size them, I lose most of the info, because most windows don't have
scroll-bars...

It'll be the first problem of many, I'm sure, so let's see who's first with
the answer...

On your marks, get set.............GO!

Try using a 1024x768 virtual desktop

contact if you need info on how.

I had the same problem,
I had to use the "xconf" program to setup my screen resolution, (not
Xconfigurator)
it let me allow ONLY 1024x768 for each color depth,
but I had to define at least one res. (1024x768) for each depth
run xconf from the console at root (careful ;-)

be SURE you make a backup copy of /etc/XF86conf before you run this, as
xconf will overwrite it!

hope this works for you!

sorry that IS  the /etc/X11/XF86conf  file..., and be sure to back it up
before running the "xconfig" command NOT  xconf

sorry for the typos
meantime I found this little ditty...
to specify the X11 color depth at startup (8bits per pixel = 256 colors,
etc.)
type:
              startx -- -bpp 16

to start X11 in "high color" 16 bbp mode or subst. 32 to start X11 in "true
color" mode

There is a console program that can be used to start and stop services.
You first see it during the initial install of RH6.0, where it presents
you with a pick-list of a dozen cryptic things you might want to start,
despite the fact that you have no idea what they do.

Well now I have some idea (or plan to find out what I can break) and I
know that I can call this beast up in console, but I can't remember the
incantation. I know there are severl X utils that will do the same
thing, but I need the console version.

Please remind me.  Thank you.  John Turnbull

1. X-windows in Windows 95 and type writers in X-windows

Hello!

I have 3 questions about X-windows:

Is there a good graphical bases typewriter (not editor) in which
i can write and layout text in x-windows, without using a bunch
of codes as in e.g. latech.

Is it possible to make a telnet like connection in a MS windows
based PC to a unix machine which is capable to run the X-windows
system. So i could use for example Xmaple when I am sitting home
where i dont have unix, but I do have a fast pc and internet.

Is there a special X-windows newsgroup?

Please e-mail me because i cant read the newsgroups so often.

thanks
