Help Needed: XFree86 3.2, Redhat 4.2 & Matrox Millenium

Post by Daniel McNult » Fri, 05 Sep 1997 04:00:00

I am trying to setup Redhat on a P100 with a Millenium video card (2M).
 I run Xconfigurator and select the Matrox card, do custom monitor

Then I choose the color depth and resolutions.  I can use any color
depth at 640x480, but if I choose a higher resolution (color depth
seems irrelevent), when I run startx Linux appears to lock up.  At this
point, the screen is black, Ctrl-Alt-BkSpc doesn't do anything and
neither does Ctrl-Alt-Del.  I must push the reset button.

If I only choose 640x480 (at any color depth) and run startx, X starts
normally.

Anyone have any ideas?

Oh, one more thing: Metro-X works at all supported color depths and
resolutions.

Have you tried XF86Setup instead of Xconfigurator? I found XF86Setup
worked much better for me.

Try a more recent version of XFree.  As I recall, 3.2 had only preliminary
support for the Millenium.  3.3 and now 3.3.1 are supposed to have much better
support.  As it says when you startup an xsession:

XFree86 Version 3.2 / X Window System
(protocol Version 11, revision 0, vendor release 6100)
Release Date: Oct 26 1996
        ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
        |||||||||||||||||
        ||||||||||||||||| (notice 3.2 was released 10 1/2 months ago)

        If the server is older than 6-12 months, or if your card is newer
        than the above date, look for a newer version before reporting
        problems.  (see http://www.XFree86.Org/FAQ)
Operating System: Linux [ELF]
Configured drivers:
  S3: accelerated server for S3 graphics adaptors (Patchlevel 0)
      newmmio, mmio_928, s3_generic
(using VT number 7)

(Hmmm, I am running 3.2 on my home system, I should upgrade someday...., but
then #9 GXEpro video cards have been supported well for some time....)

 XFree-3.3.2 always apears the message
