SuSE X Window Installation

SuSE X Window Installation

Post by Milos Pucht » Sun, 31 Dec 1899 09:00:00

I have just installed the SuSE Linux 6.2. All went as expected except for X
Window system.
The X Window is not installed as the configuration tools say and point to
the /usr/X11R6/bin/XF86_SVGA. When trying to run this the Linux answers that
it does not know this program.
(HW used - Compaq Proliant 1600, RAM 64MB, HDD 9,1GB, video CL5446, monitor
TFT450)

I will appreciate your help and comments.

TIA
Milos

make sure you know what your video card is then run SAX. If you dont have
the correct Xserver installed , mount your CD rom then run YAST find the
correct Xserver on the cd's , install it then run SAX again.
i hope this helps

I think that your prob is that by default SuSe only install XF86_VGA16, so you
have to start yast up, Choose/Install packages -> Change Create configuration ->
go down to the xsrv Several X servers enter and choose the SVGA server.
after that you will be abel to get your X up and running, you can use SaX or
Xconfig for the job to choose the new install server.

hope you will be up and running soon
kindes regards
Dan

I think that is the answer! I had the same problem when the Yast program
asked for XF86_SVGA. I installed a number of XF86 drivers and YAST
actually chose XF86_Mach64 which seems to work well. I think SuSE has
chosen the wrong tactics in making up packages. The drivers don't take
up all that much space and might be defaults.

1. Suse 7.3 installation woes on Windows ME

I have a fairly vanilla Dell system with Windows ME & 40Gb disk.

I got Suse 7.3 and followed the QIM with a view to installing.

As per QIM, I ran scandisk & defrag  - here first problem appeared:
Defrag moved some data to the end of the single Windows partition.

Next when running YAST2, it offered 17Gb Windows & 20Gb Linux - I
wished to change to 27Gb Windows & 10Gb Linux - since Windows & games
are greedy!

    - Modifying the partitioning does not work as changing the Windows
partition gives threat to destroy all data.

    - Discard looks more promising and I select disk and get to
"Preparing
Hard Disk - Step 2"
Then I select Shrink Windows partition and get a popup asking for
confirmation - then error:

   "An internal error has occurred.
You can not shrink your windows partition during the course of
installation.
Your hardware has not been altered yet."

Emails to SUSE helpdesk went round and round in circles with
references to sdb documents which did not really help. Stuff about
FIPS and defrag is earlier versions of Windows not moving system &
hidden files.

My questions are:

a) Can YAST2 resizer resize partitions with data at the end? I suspect
not.

b) Why does Windows ME defrag put data at the end - to annoy Linux
installers?

c) Are any if the alternatives worth trying for partitionings: GNU
parted, BING or Partition Magic?

d) Or is it simply easier to buy & install another hard drive and use
that for Linux (cost wise looks comparable to buying Partition Magic)?

My final comment is: this install issue seems a bit under documented -
Linux Documentation Project has relatively old docs, Suse has not much
to fall back on if does not work. This is an obstacle to spread of
Linux.

Thanks for any replies ...
