XFree86 and GW2K CrystalScan Monitor

Post by DarkSt » Sat, 21 Sep 1996 04:00:00

I have loaded XFree86 on my Gateway 2000 486/DX-33 system and I have
configured it to the specs listed for the Crystal Scan 1024NI
monitor.

(Previously, in re-loading my system when I brought a bigger hard
drive, I realized that VGA mode is the "native" mode, and that a
DOS program VGAMODE.EXE has to be run to set the monitor to be able
to run in SVGA mode).*

When I run startx, the higher resolutions fail. The only resolution that
works is the VGA resolution, which on a 14" monitor sucks.

Has anyone out there run into similar problems, and if so, what was the
solution?

I'm running Linux and the only solution I can think of is to somehow
run the DOS executable under Linux using something like DOSEMU. :-(

Can anyone out there help me?
TIA.

"About VGAMODE.EXE

VGAMODE.EXE lets you select the video hardware standard used by the
display adapter. The default video standard is VGA text mode.
VGAMODE.EXE lets you override this seeting either temporarily or
permanetly.

*DUH*
I forgot to mention that the video adapter is a WD90C31 SVGA adapter.

XFree86 and GW2K CrystalScan Monitor

Post by Steve Schroed » Thu, 26 Sep 1996 04:00:00

I have your exact system (if you have an ATI Graphics Ultra (also
known as mach 8) graphics card).  I bought my Gateway in July 1992.

VGAMODE sets up your graphics card NOT your monitor.   I was unable to
get the XFree86 mach 8 server running on my machine.  I use RedHat
Linux now which comes with a commercial X server called MetroX.
X-inside has a commercial server called Accelerated X.  I'm not
suggesting that you use one of these but you can try a demo of
Accelerated-X available at www.xinside.com.  The demo is limited
(timewise) but you should beable to  see your system run at 1024x768
noninterlaced.  That is the highest resolution the Crystal Scan 1024NI
can display.

I haven't found anyone else that has the XFree86  mach 8 server
problem like I do.

1. VideoModes - dot clock for GW2K CrystalScan 700 monitor

Hi there.  I am having problems getting the configuration of
my monitor correct.  I have RedHat 4.2 running on a PPro 200 from
Gateway 2000.  It is using a Virge/VX with 4MB VRAM and a CrystalScan
700 monitor.  I am using the S3V Xwindows server.  I have attempted
just about every setting in XF86Setup for the monitor with the result
that the server refuses to start up.  The only way that I can get
Xwindows running is to use the default VGA mode (640x480).

I have looked in the user's guide for the monitor; however, it only
talks about horizontal and vertical refresh rates (30 - 60 KHz Horz,
50 - 120 Hz Vert).  The max resolution of the monitor is 1280x1048.

I have looked through all the docs on my system, on the Internet,
etc, and no one has mentioned CrystalScan monitors (at least the 700).
I can't find the VideoModes.doc mentioned in 'Running Linux' by Walsh.
Does someone know how to solve this?

The end goal that I am after is a resolution of 1048x760.  I am not
sure what I am doing wrong.  I am looking for any one of the following:
        1)  the configuration files for the CrystalScan 700
        2)  the VideoModes.doc
        3)  the company that makes the monitors for Gateway
(I have a sneaking feeling that CrystalScan is a product
line for a company and the docs for all their monitors
are easily available, but I don't know the company.)

If someone could help, I would be grateful.  Thanks.

Ed Ames
