fdisks vs df blocks

fdisks vs df blocks

Post by Nicanor Colin » Tue, 04 Apr 1995 04:00:00

Hi,
Could somebody explain me why the number of blocks you see when a partition
is created whith fdisk is reduced after the ext2 file system is setup, like
could be see with the df command ??
I create a partition of  387072 blocks and after mkfs -t ext2 , mounting the
device and df I get only about 375000 blocks. Where are the ~10Mb difference ?

I see in one system the space reduced by 90 Mb in a 700Mb partition,
could this be a normal ext2 feature ??

Thanks

Nica Colino

Metadata (inodes, superblocks, and such).  ext2 no longer reports
metadata as part of the free disk space on the file system.

I'm looking for pointers to any amateur radio-oriented software for
Linux, along with antenna design/evaluation software like NEC that
has been ported to Linux.

Thanks...Jim

1. du -k vs df -k vs ls -al

I know there are fundamental differences between the rsults of ls, du and df
however can someone explain the significant differences in the following
output...

1.
df -k | grep u07
/dev/vx/dsk/prodres/vol-u07 3932128 2876889 662027 82% /u07 \

2.
du -k *
2 last_check
2 new_check
292648 production04.dbf
457360 production05.dbf
528512 production11.dbf
512272 production15.dbf
512272 production17.dbf
512272 production18.dbf
20512 redo0102.log
20512 redo0202.log
20512 redo0302.log
total is - 2876876(2.87gigs)

3.
ls -alt
total 5753756 (I assume this is blocks therefore it is 287 megs)
20972032 Mar 19 15:14 redo0102.log
524292096 Mar 19 15:14 production15.dbf
629149696 Mar 19 15:12 production04.dbf
629149696 Mar 19 15:12 production11.dbf
524292096 Mar 19 15:12 production05.dbf
524292096 Mar 19 15:12 production17.dbf
524292096 Mar 19 15:12 production18.dbf
20972032 Mar 19 15:00 redo0302.log
20972032 Mar 19 14:34 redo0202.log
512 Mar 15 20:04 .
512 Mar 15 16:25 ..
2036 May 15 1998 last_check
2036 May 15 1998 new_check
total is - 3418383872 (3.4gigs)

Why does production04.dbf show 290megs under a du -k but 629megs for a
ls -alt. If I understood the descrepencies with the individual files the
totals would probably make more sense.

Thanks
