Can a HP 820Cxi & Canon 4300 ex Printer work under Linux???

Post by Marlon Deer » Tue, 23 Sep 1997 04:00:00

I am looking at purchasing an HP 820 Cxi printer. The ownly thing is
that, It says that it is a Windows printer. The salesperson told me that
it works under windows only. The box says Windows 95/3.X.

Does anyone know if Linux can be configred to work with this printer?

Also, the Canon 4300ex states that it is a Windows printerr as well. Has
anyone out there been able to use eighter of these two printers under
Linux?

Thanks!

My understanding is that anything labeled "Windows Printer" or "Windows
Modem" will not work under Linux, because these components have much of the
normal hardware functions performed by proprietary software.  Theoretically,
someone could duplicate the function of the software drivers under Linux,
but I don't have the skill or the inclination.  Personally, next time around
I'm buying a printer with a hardware Postscript interpreter -- never have
been able to get my HP Deskjet 540 to work right under Linux.  (Hint, hint.)

Why would you even consider such a heinous act after all the posts,
flames, and threads about DeskJet 820 printers not working outside of
Microsift Windows 95?

Listen to the salesperson, the printer is junk.

Stay away from "Windows" anything, be it modems, printers, or whatever
piece of lobotomized junk they decide to come out with next. You aren't
going to save yourself money by buying such crap, thinking that we're
all wrong about them not working in Linux. You're only going to look
like a fool when you finally realize that these printers don't work for
yourself.

Not *under* but *with* (-;
Sure if you insist to,
take a second PC running Joke95,
and use the f***ing GDI-Printers via SAMBA.

Get the 870 printer.  I have one and i have Win95 as a print server
( using NIPRINT software) for my linux/lpd.  Great printer. Getting
cheaper by the day...

It won't work under Linux. The 870 does and is a faster printer.
It looks like the 870 is heavily discounted now that the 970 serie is out.
I was at Office depot yesterday and they were less than $400.

I've got an HP870Cxi but I'm running it as an HP DJ500 on RH4.1. How can
I get Linux to drive it in native 870 mode? Any clues welcome. If there
is a HOWTO that targets the HP870 where is it?

Actually, the HP 820 series printers don't have the common PCL
language support in them, they have a much simpler proprietary
(but not PCL, something new) software interface in them.  This was
done as a cost reduction, so that more of the "printing mechanics"
have been moved out of the printer and into the software driver of
the host.  This is why the printer is advertised as Win 3.1/95 only,
as without the supplied HP driver software, no other operating system
can talk to it (until someone figures out the new interface protocol).

This was all documented in one of the later HP Journals (summer 97?).

You _are_ driving it in "native" mode.
They all understand the same language, PCL, but newer printers have more
features and commands available to them.

To get the newer features, get the newest upgrade RPM for ghostscript,
and reconfigure your printer using the Control Panel.
RedHat 4.2 adds a lot more functionality to the printer control panel.

No, HOWTOs are not written for specific pieces of hardware.
Here's a handy URL for Alladin's Ghostscript:

Yes, sadly, everyone is correct...I got one of these "lobotomized HP
printers" (an 820 Cse) on sale before I thought I would put Linux on my
computer at home...Now after using Windoze '95 for some time I am going
to Linux. I was really chagrined to find out my printer is useless now!

But do not blame Microsoft too much! The problem is HP (a Microsoft
clone IMHO)! I use HP-UX at work and it is the most buggy, proprietary,
poor excuse for a unix operating system I have ever seen!

How is this for an example? Under HP-UX 10.x, tcpip network print queues
no longer work natively! Want Network Printing via ip with hp-ux?? Buy
only HP printers with HP-jetdirect cards install and put HP's
proprietary "jetdirect" software on your Unix server.

My next commercial Unix server purchase will be DEC or Sun!!

well, don't go *too* * HP. they do sell _some_ junk, but nearly
every company does, and enough of what they sell is not junk that i
like them. my LJ6L, for example, has only a handful of beauty spots.
every HP printer i've used (and i've carefully avoided anything
windows-only, mind) has worked extremely well.

couldn't say about HP-UX, but the hardware they run it on seems
decent. shame it's not really common enough that anybody's likely to
do a monolithic Linux port to it anytime soon.

that's no worse than what most every name brand vendor has done at
some point in time. Sun, DEC, IBM, they've all tried the proprietary
lock-in at least once. in this case, the solution should be no hairier
than installing standard BSD lpr/lpd, at least. they can't have made
_that_ undoable, can they?

I know the feeling.  My video card isn't supported by any Linux X
servers (yet).

A good, cheap, HP printer for linux is the HP672C.  I got one from Best
Buy
for about $200.  With that, ghostscript, and the magicfilter utility, I
am
quite happy with the print quality. (a2ps works once again!).

I have a Canon BJC-4300 printer connected to my RH5.2 system through
