RS/6000 Installs.

Post by Christopher DeRos » Sat, 17 Oct 1998 04:00:00

Hi All.

The last install of Linux *I* have done was on a 486/100 and it was RedHat
4.1.  (everything went great, BTW)

However....

I have acquired a few IBM RS/600 Machines (320s) and would like to know what
build of the GNU Linux I should use?  Anyone ever install Linux on these
machines before??  I know I'd need the MCA build as they are MicroChannel,
but as for the processor-specific builds, I am pretty in the dark.  Any
information you can give me would be great.

Can anyone help?

Thanks!

Go to http://www.linuxppc.org/ and then cry.  Then dry
your eyes and try to convince yourself that AIX is a
workable operating system.

The first question you need to ask yourself is what type
of processor is in this box? If it's not a PowerPC chip
then your going to be running AIX. Unless you wish to
start a new port......

Sorry, I can't offer any help.  But if you do get it working, could you post
something here?  I (and my employer) would love to know whether the RS/6000
is a viable Linux platform.

Thanks.

I do not know if Linux is running on the IBM RS/6000 PowerPC Systems. But on
the systems mentionned below it will definitly not run. i

The model 320 has an original RISC Processor which is not a single chip
implementation. This system came out in Feb 1990. The first PowerPC was
released about 4 years later.

RS/6000 don't have PowerPC processors - they have processors produced using
the 'PowerPC technology' (whatever that means) which are not compatible with
processors that we know from Macs. So I'm afraid you can't run Linux on them.

There are several people over in comp.os.linux.powerpc that you might want
to tell that to.....because......well they have it running. Sorry to
disapoint you but
the RS/6000 does use a PowerPC chip and some (NOTE: Some not all) do run
Linux. Look at www.linuxppc.org for more info. However the older machines
based on the Power or Power2 chips do NOT run Linux as there has been
no porting effort that I know off.
