Hi.  Please take a little time to peruse my list of today's traumas.  If
you can help with any of this, I'd appreciate it.  It's all re
InfoMagic's 6 CD set (Dev.'s Resource).

Debian, kernel 2.0.27.  Buslogic ISA scsi, 32 mb 30 pin ram on simm
stackers
(works fine).  When running dselect, it asks for the directory with
Packages
in it (which I've determined is /cdrom).  What do I say for the
other
    directories it asks for?

cron
cron won't restart itself at re-boot.  I've pored over /etc/init.d,
/etc/crontab,
/etc/crontab.[daily|weekly|monthly], but precious little of what I
find
in the documentation explains the debian cron layout.

clock/date/UTC/MDT
    I do:

           date
which gives me something like 'Tue Jun 17 16:06:30 MDT 1997'.  Then:

           date -u
    gives me GMT.  Now:

           date -s 'Tue Jun 17 22:18:30 UTC 1997'
           clock -w
makes the clock GMT, correct?  Then "clock -ua" will correctly
update the
hardware clock according to /etc/adjtime?  It doesn't seem to work
for me.

fvwm2 (post.hook)
    I copied /etc/X11/fvwm2/post.hook to ~/.fvwm2/post.hook, added

          + "emacs" Exec emacs

with no effect after restarting fvwm.  How is this supposed to be
done?

sendmail
How is Debian's sendmail supposed to be [re]configured?  If I'm on a
standalone,
dynamicly allocated address, what do I tell the config program that
will get
it right?  I want sendmail to handle local mail, and all the rest to
be fobbed
    off on my smarthost. [Please, don't tell me to go back to smail;
life's too
    short ...]

kernel and module compilation
How does Debian like to have its kernel and modules built so it will
all be
installed correctly?  I've seen so many conflicting signals on this,
I'm sick
of looking for info.  For instance, I've been told not to use 'make
zlilo'
'cause Debian puts things in different places and 'make zlilo'
doesn't take
this into account.  Has the 'debian_rules' step of the previous
dists been
    retired?  Was it ever relevant?

jed
jed works for both root and user in the console, but complains
"Terminal
not powerful enough for SLang" in an xterm-color terminal.

Thanks for your time.
