Linux+DOS+Win95+WinNT setup

Post by Gordon M » Fri, 30 May 1997 04:00:00

Hi, so far, I cannot find such HOW-TO. Right now, I have Linux,Win95 and
DOS installed in a system with 2 disks (a EIDE and a SCSI). I have lilo
installed on the EIDE. When Lilo boot, it finds DOS on the EIDE disk,
Win95 on the SCSI disk and Linux on the SCSI disk too. Lilo boots Win95
by setting SCSI disk as the primary disk. Hence, Win95 can overwrite the
MBR on the SCSI disk without touching the real LILO on the EIDE.

I have a new system with a 3.2GB EIDE disk and I will move the SCSI
disk (2.9GB) from my old system to the new one. I want to add NT
to it.  I want to have DOS and NT on the EIDE. Win95 and Linux on
SCSI.

How to do that? How can I boot all of them?
Will NT setup overwrite LILO on the EIDE?
Can NTFS be installed in the extended partition?

Many thanks!

The following may seem a little wierd but it is actually whatis
happening on my system right now.

I had Win95 and NT Workstation dual booting using the WinNT boot
manager.  When I decided I was going to return to Linux and Win95, I
didn't have any way to backup what was on my drive at the time so I just
deleted WinNT, leaving the boot manager present.  (I didn't realize at
the time.)  When I went to boot Linux using LILO, everything went fine.
When I booted Win95 with LILO, it skipped into the WinNT boot manager
where I was given a choice for Win95 and NT (which was mostly gone).

If you don't mind the dual boot manager, this may just work for you.
Unfortunately I was unable to test and see if WinNT would actually boot,
but it might be worth a try.

Hope this helps!

I suggest you install DOS first. Then, you can use the FDISK of the
Linux to create a partition for the NT. Next, you should install 95
and NT. Finally, you can install Linux.
I use this sequence of installation and I can install this four OS in
one EIDE harddisk.

1. Linux loopback command--WinNT/Win95 /DOS equivalent?

Hi
I've got an unusual question for someone who knows both Linux and NT (or
Win95/DOS for that matter).  I downloaded an .iso9660 file (a cd image) of
Red Hat 6.0.  It is 540mb, and took me damn near forever on my 56k
connection.  I did'nt realise that it was a disk image though, and I don't
have a CD burner.  I was pretty much stuck until a fellow from one of the
Linux Usenet groups kindly told me how to use a "loopback" command to write
it to space on the hard drive and then use that as a kind of virtual disk to
burn a boot floppy and then do the install onto another section of the
drive. The problem is that he gave me the commands in Linux/Unix terms,
which I don't understand yet.  He said that there should be an equivalent
under NT as .iso9660 is a pretty common format.  The problem is: what are
they? Here is the Linux command line he gave me:

mount -t iso9660 -o loop hedwig-27apr1999.i386.iso9660 /mnt

or with the filename removed:

mount -t iso9660 -o loop <filename>/mnt

If anyone can tell me what the WinNT or Win95 equivalent of these commands
is I would be very appreciative.  Thanks for your time.
