Retail Quake3 on Linux

Retail Quake3 on Linux

Post by Armel Pee » Fri, 19 Oct 2001 18:04:10

I just bought the linux version of q3  ($9.99 at compusa!) and everything
installs properly with the installer, but when I run quake3 I get a black
screen with the mouse on top.  I can move the mouse around but nothing but a
black screen.  I cant ctrl+alt+del, or even use a diff virtual terminal or
anything, it just sits there.  The only way to recover the system without
rebooting is to telnet in (so entire sys not locked) and kill the process.

Im running red hat 7.1 on a voodoo5 with a base install.  I didnt install
anything else driver related.  Dual 533 celeron system, 192 megs ram, 20 gig
hdd.

I just tried to play the return to castle wolfenstein demo and the same
thing happened.  Doh...  What should I do to get this working?  Im a bit
green but I can install stuff if I know what I need  :)

Well, you should probably upgrade to the latest q3 to start with.
Other than that, check out dri.sourceforge.net for drivers on your
voodoo5.

Doom 1 and 2 do, why not Wolfenstein?

I'd like to find Duke Nukem, myself :-)

1. Linux and Quake3 - Need a vote for Linux!

Hi all,

Be sure to check out the latest announcement from ID regarding their
schedule and implementation of the game Quake3 across platforms (ie.
Mac and Linux).  It does pose a dilemma for those of us who want to
play the game on both Windows and Linux.  (i.e. should I wait and buy
the Linux version or run to the store and buy the first version
available so I can get in on the action?).  I guess it depends on how
long the wait turns out to be.  You'll find the info at either
www.bluesnews.com or www.linuxgames.com.
