RH 4.0 upgrade fails: 'hostname' ok, but 'uname -n' == "(none)"

My RH upgrade from 3.0.3 to 4.0 did not go well.

Most everything is fixed except for a couple of things:

        1) PPP is working again, however uname -n returns a value of
"(none)".  How is that set?  "hostname" returns the correct
value.  (This worked fine in my 3.0.3 installation.)  This
causes my zsh prompt and the emacs title to show "(none)"
and I'm concerned about other implications.

emacs and netscape won't come up until I have a PPP
connection.  kerneld is set up for dial-on-demand.

        2) Sendmail is broke.  If it is in my rc init, it hangs bootup
for awhile.  Note the /etc/hostname file contains my domain
"further.wolfenet.com", which was the same as the 3.0.3
installation; the errata mentions changing it from
           localhost will solve this problem.

RH 3.0.3 worked fine .. pisses me off that the upgrade was so much
trouble; the only reason I upgraded were that any CERT changes are
against 4.0.  (I had already upgraded rpm (plus many other packages),
and running a 2.0.27 kernel.)

1. Why doesn't echo "text" 'command' "more text" work?

                 ^                                        ^
Wrong quotes, should be -
echo "You have" `grep Subject: /usr/spool/mail/me | wc -l` "messages."
or -
echo "You have `grep Subject: /usr/spool/mail/me | wc -l` messages."

But, another problem is, if you've no mail, /usr/spool/mail/me does not
exist, leading grep to say:
   grep: can't open /usr/spool/mail/me
Wc will still report 0.

You might try -
   sh -c 'echo "You have `grep 2>/dev/null Subject: /usr/spool/mail/me | wc -l` messages."'

Hope this helps.
