Cyrix 6x86, Redhat 3.0.3 install trouble

Post by Brian Wonderli » Sat, 15 Jun 1996 04:00:00

I have a Cyrix 6x86 120 (P150) system with a FIC PT-2003 MB.
I have been unable to get Redhat 3.0.3 to install. It will
get through to where it actually starts installing packages
after which the system hangs with kernel panics and/or segmentation
faults. It is not consistant, sometimes it will install 50+ packages
other times it will hang on #2. It hangs on both text mode installs
as well as Graphical (X server).

If anyone else has been successful or has any ideas......

Thanks

One other thing which can cause all sorts of problems is if you (a) have
a CDE IDE controller (or use that chipset), and (b) have the hd and cd
on the two EIDE channels. When you boot, use the option "hda=serialize"
to see if this is the problem.

Stupidity, like virtue, is its own reward.

TMR does UNIX and other systems stuff, some real time, network and
system admin, security, C and other good stuff.

I think you are referring to the CMD 640 PCI controller, and I don't
have that problem at least,(this board has a Triton chipset).
I re-seated all the simms and now the results have become more
consistant. It hangs with GPF's on package #2 every time now.
Part of the reason I bought a new MB was to get rid of a CMD
chip on the old one. Now I'm not so sure it was a good move, maybe
I should just buy a IDE controller and disable the on board
IDE, and go back to the old MB.
Thanks for the tip though.
