Reveal 4XCD-ROM & Slackware 2.3 CD-ROM Install

Post by Dennis Lovela » Sun, 05 Nov 1995 04:00:00

I have a Reveal brand CDROM (IDE/ATAPI) that I would like to use for a
new (first ever) install of Linux.  The CD-ROM works fine under DOS.
I have configured the drive as the slave on the first (only) IDE
controller in the system.  It is identified by Linux at startup time
(dev/hdb).  Sometimes (in setup, using IDECD boot image) when I do
autoscan for the device, it is found; other times it is not. From
Source menu, I select <I>nstall from CDROM, then <7> Most
IDE-interface CD drives. When I select <S>lackware, some messages
appear on the screen, then the ERROR: DIRECTORY NOT FOUND message
occurs (The Slackware directory could not be found. You'll have to
reconfigure your source media before you can install). This is
invariably followed by MOUNT errors, until I end setup and start it
again.

How can I:
o Determine what the real problem is?
o Find more information on installation from ATAPI drive (I'm a
    newbie, and am very lost)
o Pause the screen when messages appear

I appreciate any advice.  If you wish to e-mail me directly (which I

lot.

Reveal 4XCD-ROM & Slackware 2.3 CD-ROM Install

Post by Dennis Lovela » Tue, 07 Nov 1995 04:00:00

First of all, "thank you" to those who responded to my first msg
regarding the Reveal ATAPI CD-ROM problems that I am having. I am
now able to find error messages realted to the drive, but cannot
interpret them.  Below, I have the startup log from a boot of the
freshly installed Linux. I have not trimmed it, since I am not yet
knowledgeable enough to know what might be important in resolving
this problem.  The problem seems (to me) to be identified by the
message which reads:
mount: wrong fs type, /dev/hdb already mounted, /cdrom busy,
           or other error
but I cannot figure out its cause. I would appreciate it if
someone with more experience would share their ideas on this.

I have done nothing to the configuration to correct this, since I am
starting from ground zero... haven't even learned how to edit files
under Linux yet.  Am I in deep doo-doo?

Thanks a lot.  My E-Mail address is:

Reveal 4XCD-ROM & Slackware 2.3 CD-ROM Install

Post by Nicholas Komarnitz » Wed, 15 Nov 1995 04:00:00

If you have any information on the linux installation useing
the Reveal 4XCD-ROM model # GCD-R540B would you please let me
know.... i cant seem to get the damm thing to read for the cd...It
see's it ..but can read to it ...it keeps trying to init.at 320 b.a.
and 10 irq  but fails miserablely.....i would owe you  a grave
Debt of Honor if you could help solve my quest for further
Knowledge.

to the rest of you have trouble ...drop me i line ,and
i can tell you what not to do..............

1. linux, Mitsumi CD-ROM (& SB), & the TA CD-ROM - solved!

Finally!

As I posted recently, I got the TA CD-ROM, and found that the setup kernel
recognized the CD drive, but the installed one didn't. I had trouble with
the recompile, as well.

The answer is:
in (I think it's) /etc/include/linux/drivers/blocks, there are *two*
makefiles. One is named Makefile, the other Makefile.orig. When
I diffed them, I discovered Makefile.orig *had* conditions for
compiling the Mitsumi driver, the Soundblaster driver, and one
other driver, and Makefile *didn't*. I renamed both, and reran
the compile. No problems, using lilo (after the usual moving &
/etc/lilo/install) I boot off my hard drive, I can mount the
        CD ROM, etc.

I am emailing TA this, as well.
