printer issues

Post by Marc Ulric » Thu, 01 Feb 2001 06:20:10

I have "inherited" a linux system with RedHat 6.0 installed on it. I am
having troubles getting the system to install a printer. I have a PCL
printer, the HP LaserJet 1100, and there is plenty of information via
web that this printer works fine with Linux. However, here is the
problem:

When I run the printtool program and select "add" then "local", the
message showing which "ports" have devices attached to them says that
neither lp0,lp1 nor lp2 have devices attached to them. The message
suggests looking into the hardware if this happens. Apparently, Linux
cannot see that there is a printer there. I have verified that the
hardware works correctly because the system is a dual-boot with win95.
In Win95, the printer works fine, thus, the hardware is attached
correctly.

Can someone help me out!?

Thanks in advance,
Marc

Look in /etc/conf.modules and be sure this line is there, then try to
configure it again.

Now I have another problem -- the printer will only spit out blank
pages. The printtool detected the printer, I selected the LaserJet 4
driver from the "filter" options (I am using a LaserJet 1100 & the
Laserjet4 drivers are supposed to work for it). The printer is getting
data as its light blinks and it spits out paper, but there is nothing on
it. In one instance of fooling around, I got it to give me one line of
text, but nothing more.

What am I doing wrong?

1. SCO Openserver Printer issues

Greetings,

We use several SCO Openserver 5.0.5 servers in our environment.
I am trying to set up a remote printer between two servers.

Server A that hosts the printer does have the correct entries in
the hosts.lpd and hosts.equiv file to allow Server B to print to it.

When Server B prints to the remote printer, the first page prints correctly
but subsequent pages have a few blank lines between the top of the page
and the text.  After the next page the blank lines increase.
Its basically a huge joke.

We've tried countless approcahes to remedy this, but nothing seems to work.
The files we print (if you can call it that) are regular text files.

If anyone has a suggestion, I'd be most appreciative.
