Can't start vi and gcc

Can't start vi and gcc

Post by Erik Boerstoe » Thu, 26 Sep 2002 07:08:07

Hi,

I've installed Mandrake 8.2 but apparently something went wrong: I
cannot start vi and gcc. I get the error messages:

bash: gcc: command not found

and

bash: vi: command not found

However, I do think that I've installed both; for example, I was able to
locate gcc-2.96 in /usr/bin.
Could it be that gcc is some kind of variable that actually points to
/usr/bin/gcc-2.96 (I've also taken a look at 'man gcc' -> that help info
is also about gcc-2.96).

Any help is very much appreciated!

Erik

Can you run gcc by typing '/usr/bin/gcc-2.96' ?
Could be your path is messed up -or- could mean permissions are messed up.

try the command
   echo $PATH

You may even find pleasant results with the command:
  export PATH=/bin:/usr/bin:/usr/local/bin
