Ghostscript 5.10 under Red Hat 5?

Ghostscript 5.10 under Red Hat 5?

Post by Marc S. Jense » Fri, 06 Feb 1998 04:00:00

hi all!

I just installed Red Hat 5.0, and most everything is working
beautifully.  BUT...

According to the RH install program notes, the 3.33 GNU ghostscript that
ships with the Red Hat CDs is known to have some problems with the newer
HP LaserJet 5-series printers.  So, I went to RH's ftp server and
downloaded the ghostscript-5.10-2.rpm file (and the two font files), and
installed it.  I then tried running "gs", which resulted in a
segmentation fault & coredump!!!

I've re-downloaded the new ghostscript RPM file from two different
sites, upgraded to the latest available (official RH RPM) ld.so, libc,
and glibc, and it still doesn't work.  No matter what I do, gs
coredumps!

Is it "safe" to just download the GS source and recompile on my system?
(I.e., will the RedHat utils that require GS still work if I use a GS
that wasn't installed from an official RPM?)

Any thoughts?

If you have all the files it should; it does not matter how you install
them.
Read the README, INSTALL or whatever docs come with the software.
RedHat installs binaries in /usr/bin, but the installation scripts that
come with other software will most likely (by default) install binaries
in /usr/local/bin and, hence, not overwrite the old one. Not sure about
fonts, etc; but that's why I would uninstall tha package first.
You might have to check your PATH, MANPATH, INFOPATH (etc?) to make sure
the /usr/local/bin, ...man, ...info (etc?) are included (should be
anyway).
A make -n install might give you some more ideas on how to adjust the
installation (or your system).
And if you want too much time you can even build your own rpm package;
there is a manual of RPM you can download.
That holds for any package, not just ghostview. To get ghostview I would
check Adobes' site for the latest release (and the license).

I too am having ghostscript 5.10 under Red Hat 5 problems.  Launching
my printtool by clicking the icon on the control panel bought up the
printool window but it quickly dissappeared. The printtool process
showed as a zombie in top.

Then I lauched the printool like this:

        # printtool &

and I got the following error message:

"gshelp": no such variable
    while executing
"string first "Available devices:" $gshelp"
    (procedure "find_gs" line 28)
    invoked from within
"find_gs"
    (file "/usr/bin/printtool" line 2953)

I can't successfully read a *.ps file in ghostview either.

I do not have the answer to the problem, but perhaps there are enough
clues so that someone might figure it out.

1. Red Hat 5.0 vs. Red Hat 5.1

Hello everybody - what a beautiful day it is! Let's not get to funked
up, and get yourself a nice little pink flower to put in a orange vase.
Then grab yourself a slice and sit down and enjoy yourself. It can be
done in lot's of different ways -- just go ahead and do it under the
green sun.

Well... Nevermind.

I'm planning to buy Red Hat 5.1 official to replace my Red Hat 5.0 with.
But before I do that I wonder if there are any disadvantages, hazards or
such with RH 5.1, compared to RH 5.0. Is the installation as safe (don't
forget LILO), and things such as X, sound-support, printers and ppp -
are they still well supported, and not buggy or so?

Thanks in advance,

/Henrik

By the way, don't let the opening of this letter make you think that I'm
not serious enough.
