multi-user: multi-head (monitor), USB keyboards and mice?

Post by Snicker » Sun, 31 Dec 1899 09:00:00

Now that XFree86 version 4 has support for multiple graphics cards,
and Linux has added USB support, can I set up a single PC with
multiple monitors and multiple keyboards and mice (USB) and have
multiple people, each logged into their own X session on each
monitor/keyboard/mouse?

How many people can I set up like this on one machine? What is the
limiting factor, the # of PCI slots? If I use matrox cards with dual
monitor support on a single card, can I have double the number of
people as I have available PCI slots?

What needs to be done to set this up?

Thanks for your input!

1. multi-user: multi-head (monitor), keyboard, mouse, setup?

I have heard that Linux is just now starting to support "multi-head"
operation, with XFree86 version 4. Every reference that I have seen so
far is to one user having multiple screens with just one mouse and
keyboard. The comparisons I have seen are to Windows 98 or 2000, or
Macintoshes, where one person can have windows on multiple monitors.

I am wondering, since Linux is multi-user, and since support for USB
mice and keyboards is also coming into being, is it now possible,
given enough RAM,  to have just one PC, with multiple users logged
into their own X sessions, each with their own monitor, keyboard and
mouse?

If this is possible, how difficult is it to set up? How many users can
one put on one PC? I would guess it is the number of available PCI
slots that would limit it? Would using Matrox dual monitor graphics
cards double the number of monitors one could use for a given number
of free PCI slots? Is there a cheaper way than using USB keyboards and
mice to have many of them hooked into one PC?

What hardware should I buy if I want to do this now?

Thanks for your input!
