lpd is confusing the newbie

Post by Eric Thei » Mon, 25 Jan 1999 04:00:00

I have recently converted from the world of M$ to Linux and everything
is working fine except the lpd.  I think that I have most everything
configured properly(based on the Printing HOWTO by Grant Taylor).  I
have Slackware 3.6 on a Gateway P5-120 with a 1.2gb drive.  The printer
is an HP LJ+ on the parallel port. I have the printer defined on lp1 in
the printcap file and a localhost entry in the hosts.equiv file.  The
lpd starts on boot, but when I run lpq it says that there is no daemon
present.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
TIA

I will never know why Grant took out my section of the HOWTO that was
devoted to explaining the meaning of this message.

It means that there is no daemon process presently despooling from
that particular print queue.  This is perfectly normal if the queue is
empty.  The initial instance of lpd will fork-off a daemon to handle
the queue if anything is put in there.

what is the best way to learn about setting them up? Thank you.
