Linux on a Toshiba Tecra 8000?

Post by Robert Hofman » Thu, 11 Mar 1999 04:00:00

Hi all...

I want to install Linux (together with WinNT using a bootmanager) on a Toshiba
Tecra 8000...

Does anybody do/tried this already? If so, what are your experiences.

Is there a list of supported hardware (esp. PCMCIA-cards)?

I want to setup Ethernet (BNC/TwistedPair), ISDN, SCSI, DVD, CD, K56-modem,
ext. videomodes > 1024x768.

Any help would be very welcome. Please reply via eMail if possible

Regards,
    Robert

There's a hardware HOWTO at
"http://doc.rmplc.co.uk/linux/LDP/HOWTO/Hardware-HOWTO.html"
It includes a PCMCIA list.

It cetainly can be done.  I have Win95 and RH 5.2 on my Tecra 8K.  You will
need the latest version of pcmcia-cs from David Hinds (3.0.9 last time I
looked).  The pcmcia stuff is still a bit flakey (at least for my 3Com
ethernet card), but it does work.  Forget the built in modem, though.  It's
a cheesey Winmodem and will not work in Linux.  I'm still wrestling with
the sound card; I'm sure that I can figure it out as soon as I can find
some time.

It's a decent Linux box.  KDE runs wonderfully on the NeoMagic 1024x768
screen and the machine is generally fast and responsive.  Let me know if
I can help with some of the details.....................Ian

*** I can second that. I've got Win98, WinNT, RH52 (2.0.36-3) and OpenBSD
2.4 on mine and everything works fine. KDE1.1 in 1024x768x16bpp, 3CXEM556
(10MB/s + v.90 modem), OPL3-SAx sound everything working as expected.

1. setting up linux on toshiba tecra 8000

I am trying to setup linux(got it from linux-
mandrake.com) on my tecra 8000. I had NT on the
laptop. I installed linux on different partition
but I have two problems.

1. when it boots up, the system hangs at
LI...If I try to boot from the disk(during linux
intallation,I made boot disk also), it comes up
fine.

2. Also the windows running on linux seems to
repaint very slowly... It appears as if you are
using X-windows on a dialup.

Thanks in advance,
anindya
