3 Hail Marys should help. The so called bugginess of
RH7 is _greatly_ exaggerated. If you are new to Linux
use RH6.2. If you are an olde head use RH7. I use it
and I'm not complaining.

No need to apologize. It's better than mine.

redhat 6.2 or 7.0?

Stick to redhat 6.2  The 7.0 is real bad, lots of bugs and the glib they
used is non-standard and is going to be only supported by redhat.  I tried
7.0 and went right back to good old 6.2

redhat 6.2 or 7.0?

Post by E J » Sun, 31 Dec 1899 09:00:00

Redhat Linux 7.0 CD fixed a lot of problems, I cannot format the last
20G of my 40G harddrive with RH6.0
Redhat Linux 7.0 broke Word Perfect 8,  I cannot run or install Word
Perfect 8 on a brand new install of RH7.0
I installed libc-5.3.12-31.i386.rpm and ld.so-1.9.5-13.i386.rpm from
Redhat 6.2 CD and it now works.
I cannot use efax with fax as a entry in /etc/printcap in RH7.0, it
breaks all printing unless I remove the fax entry.

Why would you recommend RH 6.2 to new users and RH 7 to more experienced
users - just curious...

RH6.2 has stood the test of time. RH7 has issues which may
frustrate a newbie. I feel it is better to ease a newbie
into Linux than dump him/her in the deep and hope all ends
well.

Now, mind you, RH7 works and works well. I know. I use it.
I also have a 6.2 machine that sees more work.

Hope this helps.

redhat 6.2 or 7.0?

I don't call myself an expert but I'm no newbie. I tried 7.0 too and had
several difficulties with it. The kernel issue is simple to solve by
using kgcc and a "standard" 2.2.16 kernel (I had problems with the
RedHat 2.2.16-22 and kgcc). Have you tried to compile a KDE 1.x/Qt 1.4x
program with the supplied C++ libraries and compiler ? All programs I
tried gave me an error in qregion.h where a non ansi "defined" is used
according to g++. If you could help me out of this problem I could
switch to 7.0. No need to mention that the programs compiled ok on 6.x !

Thanks in advance,
Torsten

Haven't compiled anything on RH7 yet apart from the 2.4 test
kernels. And I only installed KDE 2.0. I never did put on
KDE 1.x.
