Problems with CD-ROM under Linux 1.2.11

I am trying to upgrade my kernel from version 1.1.58 to 1.2.x (the source I
have
now is 1.2.11).  The problem is, I loose my CD-ROM drive under the new kernel.
It worked fine before, but nothing under the new one.  It is a Sony cdu31a,
attached to a SB AWE32 soundcard.  I looked at the source for cdu31a.c in the
1.2.11 kernel.  All I could find of help was that the CD-ROM was no longer
autoprobed.  I have tried adding the line append=cdu31a="0x230,0", but still
no success.  On boot-up I get the message /dev/sonycd is not a block devices
and
upon looking in /proc/devices, the CD-ROM is not listed, as it is with 1.1.58.
Can some one tell me what I am over looking?
