Colorado FC-10/FC-20 and an external tape unit

Hello All,

Currently I have an internal Colorado DJ-35, a "Jumbo 350", which
should connect to the floppy controller (using ftape 2.08) inside my case.
However, I have no free drives bays, so at the moment the drive is sitting
in an external installation kit (Model No. KE-09) made by Colorado. In the
installation guide, it says that the 37pin connector should attach to an
FC-10 tape controller. I assume that on this controller there is an
external female 37 pin connector...anyway, I have seen an FC-20 for sale
and I am thinking about installing this in the conputer, and connecting
the drive to the external port on that.

However, the installation guide makes no reference to this controller (the
FC-20), and what I want to know is.. does anyone know if the KE-09
(well, the Jumbo 350 inside it) will sucessfully connect to the FC-20 tape
controller. I guess that it should do. Can anyone tell me the difference
between the FC-10 and the FC-20.????

Also, on the FC-20, of which I have a picture.. there appears to be a
power connector located on the top of it.. I presume that inorder to
supply power to the external unit, I have to connect a lead from my
internal PSU to this card??? I have also heard of a KE-10 external kit.
Can anyone tell me what this is for??

Any help offered will be gratefully received.

Thanks in advance.

The FC-10 was discontinued years ago.  It is an 8-bit controller for
floppy tape drives.  The FC-20 is still on the market as you have seen
It is a 16 bit controller and it will use an upper DMA channel if you
tell it to.  This is one of the reasons HP-Colorado says that it will
make your drive run twice as fast.  Also, the FC-20 is jumperless, so
you will need to configure it through a software utility.  Finally, yes,
the KE-09 kit will run your drive off of the FC-20's external connector.

You are right about the power connecter.  Plug one of the PSU connectors
into the card and then both juice and data will be routed through the
main cable bundle on the KE-09.  You will find a power connector inside
of the KE-09 that you can plug your drive into.

The KE-10 is the same kit but it comes with a riser that fits in one
of the computer's expansion slots.  It's not a controller, ie there
are no electronics other than a resistor and a fuse.  It is just a
"floppy ribbon cable to KE-09 cable" converter.  For a jumbo 350, this
is probably all you need since a FC-20 usually costs about 70 dollars US.

Good luck
