Running Windows 3.1 in standard mode under Dosemu 0.6.3

Running Windows 3.1 in standard mode under Dosemu 0.6.3

Post by Bharat Jhave » Thu, 03 Aug 1995 04:00:00

Could someone please tell me how to run Windows in standard mode under
Dosemu 0.60.3 . I can get Windows to run under protected mode using
protected mode quite well, but it is still unable to run large
programs. For example, I can run solitaire (?? spelling), but I have
hard time with MS Works.

I understand that Windows runs well in standard mode under Dosemu,
but I could not figure out. After I boot Dosemu, I run "win /s", and I
get a message saying that, "protected mode software  is running,so
Windows can not run in standard mode". In Dosemu.conf, I have set dpmi
at 14000, xms at 64 and ems at 4096. I guess EMM386  and HIMEM  are
running under Dosemu. Actually I do get Windows initial greeting
picture before it quits.

Please let me know if if you have any ideas. So far, Dosemu works very
well with other graphics programs like Epic Pinball, and so on. Even
Windows seems to run (unstable) under enhanced mode.

Thanks.

I was under the impression that Windows 3.0 could run under real
mode, but that Windows 3.1 in either standard or enhanced mode
was not reliable yet.

Comments?

1. Dosemu-0.60.3 and Windows 3.1 (standard mode)

-I'm attempting to get dosemu-0.60.3 to run Windows 3.1 (in standard mode).  My
-linux box is running on a 486 DX2/66 with 20MB ram and 16MB swap with kernel
 -1.2.1.
 -  I've patched the kernel (kernel.diff), recompiled the kernel and then compiled
-dosemu (according to the QuickStart information) and made suitable adjustments
-to /etc/dosemu.conf.  Everything compiles fine but win /s wont run. It complains
-about removing the already loaded protected mode software.
 -  (I've also compiled the dosemu with the emumodule (making sure it was loaded
-into memory before starting dosemu) with no problems but still Windows doesn't
 -run in standard mode)
 -  Has anyone got a vanilla Windows 3.1 in standard mode running from
-dosemu-0.60.3 (or do you have to have Win OS/2?)

 -dosemu.conf, autoexec.bat, config.sys, win.ini, and system.ini might shed some
 -light on the matter)

You need to read doc/README.Windows in the distribution.
