Very Computer

Hi All,

I set up a linux network a while ago with umsdos based computers booting most
of their filesystem from a linux nfs server. I had the umsdos computers
doing all logging to the fileserver. Everything worked fine. At some point
(I believe with a kernel upgrade) the remote logging stopped working. Does
anyone have any fixes / suggestions to get it working again as its very
necessary to keep checks on security.

I'm experiencing the same problem, I'm running:

        Linux Garfield 2.0.27 #10 Wed Dec 4 11:45:48 MET 1996 i586

Syslogd should receive remote messages. I didn't use that feature prior to
this Linux, but even when I start syslogd  with debug option, it states,
that it'll listen to the syslog port, but obviously it doesn't hear
anything. Something must be deaf ;-)

Any ideas why this doesn't work? Kernel Problem? TCP/IP Problem?

Have a look in a sunsite mirror under system/Daemons, for a thing called
syslog-fifo...

I haven't fully tested it yet, but it least it will start up convincingly...

I got syslogd-fifo, installed it, and it WORKED! I think I'll stick to the
fifo-ed syslogd, instead of the socket-ed syslogd.
