help: mounting floppy

here's my fstab file:

/dev/hda2      /               ext2     defaults         1    1
none          /dev/pts         devpts   gid=5,mode=620   0    1
none          /proc            /proc    default          0    0
/dev/fd0      /mnt/floppy      msdos    noauto,user      0    1
/dev/fd0      /floppy          msdos    noauto,user      0    1

(i think that first line says 'hda2', but i wrote down 'hda1' for some
reason'

as root, typing 'mount /mnt/floppy' gives error:
mount:  mount point /mnt/floppy does not exist

typing 'mount /mnt/floppy/' gives error:
mount:  can't find /mnt/floppy/ in /etc/fstab or /etc/mtab

i'm a novice here, and my man files don't currently work.
did i set up the fstab correctly? do i need to do anything
additionally?

any 'mount blah' (as in my fstab file) does produce a 'click' from my
floppy, so something physical *does* happen

i'm running slackware of some sort...

thanks,

As the error says, "mount point /mnt/floppy does not exist".
You must have a directory /mnt/floppy in order to mount a device on it.
do a listing of /mnt (ls /mnt) and you'll likely find that you have no
/mnt/floppy directory. Make one (mkdir /mnt/floppy, as root) and your
mount problem should be solved.

think that 'mount' is somewhat confused with two mount points for a
single /dev (device).

try to remove one of the two, mount the remaining one.

'mount' would NOT be confused by that. It would be confused if it had
two devices with the same mount point. But two mount points with the
same device would be fine.

If he tries to mount /floppy, mount will mount /dev/fd0 onto /floppy
If he tries to mount /mnt/floppy, mount will mount /dev/fd0 onto
/mnt/floppy.

so simple, it just never occured to me to make a directory!

thanks again,

1. Help mounting floppies (no file system?)

I am trying to format and mount some high density floppies on my sparc.

I used volcheck and fdformat, and things proceeded without any
error messages.  The problem is that the floppy file system is
not appearing under /floppy like I expect.

I have some older floppies that I created under SunOS, and they
mount fine, so the machine seems to be OK.

I thought that perhaps my problem was that I hadn't created a
file system on the floppy.  After a bit of poking around, I ran

        newfs  /vol/dev/diskette0/unnamed_floppy#1

which caused more disk spinning and whirring, but still no
disk under /floppy.

Can anyone help?

Thanks in advance...
