I had a similar problem .. I believe you need to recompile the Kernel.
Check and see if you have a README file in the /usr/src/linux directory.
Follow the instructions in the README file.  If there are no files in
the /usr/src/linux directory, then you need to re-install and make sure
you have installed the Linux 1.2.3 kernel.

TCP/IP- Ethernet Card detection error SIOCSIFADDR

Post by Arbi » Wed, 23 Aug 1995 04:00:00

My system seems to be running ok after installing from slakware 2.3
I have a 4-Dimension ne2000 Ethernet card. On booting the message I
get is:

SIOCSIFADDR: No such device
SIOCSFBRDADDR:No such device
SIOCSIFNETMASK:No such device
SIOCADDRT:Network is unreachable

and the networking is not working. I have set all the netconfig correctly.
How do I get the system to see my card. I have even tried with an SMC card.
I loaded linux in another system with SMC card and all I had to do was use netconfig
to configure the network and the system detected the card without my having to do anyhting.
Is there something I am missing. I read through the HOWTO for Ethernet
and the FAQs but either didn't understand or didn't find any help. Can someone give me any hints.
I would really appreciate it.
Thanks.

I spent 4 nights working on the same problem! It turned out that my
configuration was right... but LINUX could not read my NE2000 clone
ethernet cards.  I spent the bucks for 2 3com 3c509B cards. They
work like a charm! I had to use the line......
       loadlin vmlinuz ether=12,0x320,eth0

1. SIOCSIFADDR network error with ne2000 ethernet card

Thanks.
