I am getting a new computer in june consequently when win 98 comes out
and it will probably be on there already which makes the hd a FAT 32 ,
I read that Once its Fat 32 it can't go back to FAT 16 however can
I partiton the FAT 32 hd with partition magic 2.0 , or will it not allow
me to partition it?

thanks

Nima,

Win98 supposedly will ship with a FAT32 converter, but will only convert
in one direction - from FAT16 to FAT32.

Both Partition Magic and Partition-It can convert in both directions
without affecting data on the partition. The current version of
Partition Magic is 3.05. It may be 3.02 or something out of the box, but
can be updated to 3.05 at PowerQuest's web site. It's a good idea to do
that because some bugs related to FAT32 have been fixed since version
3.00 was released.

PM version 2.XX and earlier do not support FAT32 at all.

I've never tried Partition-It, but I couldn't recommend any software any
more highly than PM. It's invaluable, especially when you run multiple
OS's and file systems on one machine.

AFAIK, Partition Magic 2.0 does not support FAT32. But PM 3.0 does.

The simpler (and cheaper) solution is to tell the computer store that you
don't want to pay $100+ for them to preload an OS you don't want.

I have used the newest version of FIPS to alter a FAT32 drive.
