debian 2.4.21 compile failure

Hi there,

For those who helped get my disk issue straightened out - Thanks!

However lately I have been trying to compile the new kernel and am
unable to do so

What I did was to

  wget http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/v2.4/linux-2.4.21.tar.gz
use the config-2.4.18-bf2.4 as .config input without making any
alterations
  then make oldconfig
  and finaly make-kpkg kernel-image

The result is the error below

/usr/src/linux-2.4.21/debian/tmp-image/lib/modules/2.4.21; \
mkdir -p pcmcia; \
find kernel -path '*/pcmcia/*' -name '*.o' | xargs -i -r ln -sf ../{}
pcmcia
if [ -r System.map ]; then /sbin/depmod -ae -F System.map -b
/usr/src/linux-2.4.21/debian/tmp-image -r 2.4.21; fi
depmod: *** Unresolved symbols in
/usr/src/linux-2.4.21/debian/tmp-image/lib/modules/2.4.21/kernel/drivers/net/wan/comx.o
depmod:         proc_get_inode
make[2]: *** [_modinst_post] Error 1
make[2]: Leaving directory `/usr/src/linux-2.4.21'
make[1]: *** [real_stamp_image] Error 2
make[1]: Leaving directory `/usr/src/linux-2.4.21'

I have treid this method and others to get a new kernel but it always
fails at this point

Thanks in advance
George
