Linux and DX4 100 ODs?

Linux and DX4 100 ODs?

Post by Roger Phi » Wed, 05 Jun 1996 04:00:00

Hi there,
has anybody had a problem running linux on an Intel DX4 100 OD?
I have both Win 95 and one of the lastest slakware versions of linux and the
Win 95 works fine but linux soon hangs. If I put the previously installed DX33
back in every thing seems to be fine. I was wondering if it might have some thing
to do with the fact that the on baord voltage regulator interfers with the signal
generation for other devices such as the VLB graphics card since it does not
immediately respond when the machine is started from cold - but does come to life
after several presses of the reset button. Again the graphics card is fine with
the DX33. the trouble is I can't decide if it is a hardware fault with the chip,
or, ignoring the boot problem, if it is a problem with linux.

Any ideas? Should I just trade the DX 4 100 for something else or is it fixable?

many thanks

Roger

I run an AMD 486DX4-100MHz.  Never had any problems with it.  Perhaps your
MB settings aren't correct?  I don't know much about processors, but I know
that processors do come in different voltages; perhaps you're running a new
5V processor in a 3.3V socket, or something similar?

Dunno for certain, just a guess ...

I'm using a 486/100 intel and it runs fine. I have
a vlb graphics card, vlb disk controller, and an
ethernet card in it and I use to have a modem in
addition, so it's not the type of problem you
describe. The voltage regulators should only drop
the voltage to the chip, I can't see how it would
couple to anything else. You might want to take
everything out and clean it up and reseat the boards.
Make sure you are seating the cpu well and that the
lever on the ziff socket is secure. look at the pins
on both the 33 and 100 and see if you see any anomaly.
good luck, the 100 works really well.

1. AMD DX4/120 vs. INTEL DX4/100

The subject says it all.  Has anyone had a negative experience with the
AMD DX4/120(or even the DX4/100 for that matter) with Linux?  I am
currently running a Intel DX2/66, and I haven't given up on the 486 line
yet.  Besides, with a Matrox Millenium and 16MB RAM my system is still
faster than some Pentiums.  I am looking for the best price/performance
upgrade.  The Intel DX4/100 goes for around $210, while the AMD DX4/100
goes for around $120, and the AMD DX4/120 for around $150.  I have heard
that the AMD DX4/120 is comparable to the Intel DX4/100 in speed, even
though it is about $60 dollars cheaper.  Anyone have any input on this?
