Red Hat 5.1 and OS/2 Boot Manager

Red Hat 5.1 and OS/2 Boot Manager

Post by The African Chi » Tue, 30 Jun 1998 04:00:00

Hi all

I have just obtained a copy of Red Hat 5.1 on a
single CD, and I have created my boot disk. I
have OS/2 Boot Manager installed, with Win95,
NT, and OS/2 Warp installed. When I installed
the boot manager, I created an extra partition for
the time when I get brave enough to install Linux.
Now I am nearly brave enough, I would like to
know one thing - will Red Hat install onto this
extra partition with no problems, or do I still need
to do something with  LILO? I am anxious to ascertain
that RH will not tamper with by boot manager, and
will just politely do stuff on its own assigned partition
only.

Thanks for any info or tips.

Best regards, The Chief

:No problem between Boot Manager and Linux, but you will need LILO
anyway.
:AFAIK, you always need LILO to boot Linux, no matter what you use to
select
:the operating system to be booted.
:- Add the Linux partition to the Boot Manager menu BEFORE you begin
:installing Linux. You may get a warning because there is no operating
:system yet. (I don't remember if I got that kind of warning, but if
you do,
:you can ignore it.)
I use PQMagic's Boot Manager (hda2) for W95 (hda3), NT4 (hda1) and
RedHat (hda6).  No need to add the Linux partition to the Boot Menu
until after you install it - there is a chance that the reformatting
to Linux will corrupt the entry.
After loading linux (which does not care about which partition is
active), and lilo into hda6 (NOT mbr), I rebooted to W95 via the Boot
Manager option (set active by the mbr).  I returned to PQ Magic, which
now reported hda6 as a linux partition (it could not identify the
linux swap), and just added it to the Boot Menu.

I added the Linux partition to the Boot Manager menu at the
time that I installed the Boot Manager - so it is there already on
the menu, but of course it can't be selected (yet).

Quote:> - Begin installing and let the installation program format the Linux

This is where I have a problem. I actually started the installation
last night but aborted it at the point where it wanted me to specify
a root. It showed me all my partitions, and then I had to specify
a root. At this point I had no idea what was actually required of
me, and there was no on-line help - so I just rebooted the PC,
to wait until I knew *precisely* what I was expected to do, and
*precisely* what would happen when I did it. I am none the
wiser on both issues, so I would appreciate any help please.

Ok - thanks.

You will need a minimum of two partitions for Linux -- one for
swap and one for root.  I did an installation similar to what you
are planning last summer.  I created both partitions with the OS/2
fdisk, and added the root partition to the Boot Manager menu
then.  (Maybe that isn't necessary, but that's what I was told to
do.)  The swap partition might be anywhere from 30 to 100 MB.

During the installation, you will use fdisk or Disk Druid to
format the two Linux partitions appropriately.  (I recommend fdisk
for what you're doing.  I think it's safer when you have other
OSes.)

Red Hat 5.1 and OS/2 Boot Manager

Thanks for all those who gave pointers and
tips. I discovered that RH wanted to have a
native Linux partition to install the root on, but
seemed not to want to allow me to convert my
designated Linux partition from FAT16 to native
Linux. Faced with the prospect of deleting the
partition and then making a new one, I decided
to try SuSE 5.2 instead (just to see, since I had
bought cheap (2 pounds each) CDs of RH 5.1
and SuSE 5.2).

Needless to say, SuSE's installer (YaST) is
IMHO way ahead of RH's installer in terms of
ease of use. There was context-sensitive
on-line help at every point, with full explanations
of what was actually going on, and what it was
going to do. It also allowed me to convert my
DOS partitions to native Linux partitions and to
continue with my installation.

Now, I have a working SuSE installation - but
no working X11. XF86Setup works okay, but
tells me that I have to install an XF86_SVGA
server, which I have no idea how to do ...
I have a Diamond Stealth 2500 card. All
tips are welcome. The struggle continues ...
