Need help with a SMC Elite (not ultra, its the 83c690 chipset)

Anybody successfully set this one up? Im using slackware, and
I uncommented the wd module. Everything appears to work, but when it is
assigned to an address eth0 doesnt report back as setting to an address.

Any suggestions?
