XFree86 on Toshiba Satellite Pro (Trident CyberBlade XP)

Has anyone had any luck getting XFree86 running on a Toshiba Satellite Pro
4600 or any machine with a Trident *Blade XP?

I've install RedHat 7.2 and the X server included didn't work, when I
installed XFree86 4.2.0 no matter how I configure the server, I get

Fatal server error:
no screens found

Any insight or assistance is welcome! :)

Thanks

It should be a video card problem. Two directions:
a) Install the new release of XFree86 4.2.0 if it doesn't come with RH
7.2
b) Visit XIG (http://www.veryComputer.com/) perhaps they have a driver for your
card

Check to see if your graphics chip set (you'll need to know the chip
set not the commercial name) is supported under Xfree:

http://www.veryComputer.com/

*or* under SDD for Linux:

http://www.veryComputer.com/

I pulled these from a list I have and have not looked for you so I do
not know if your chip set is supported. I would guess, with 4.2.0, it
is supposed to be supported and perhaps you just need to rerun the
config for X on your laptop.

BTW, I trimmed your x-post list a bit. It was excessive.

Since you're using XFree86 4.x, you might be able to make it work if you
run it as VESA. It works for me, but I'm limited to 16 bit colors (until
I find another solution [:-)]

I have added these lines to my /etc/X11/XF86Config-4:
**************************************************
Section "Monitor"
   Identifier "Toshiba LCD"
   HorizSync 31.5 - 82.0
   VertRefresh 50-90
EndSection

Section "Device"
   Identifier "Trident XP"
   Driver "vesa"
   #VideoRam 16384
EndSection

Section "Screen"
   Identifier "myscreen"
   Device "Trident XP"
   Monitor "Toshiba LCD"
   DefaultDepth 16
   SubSection "Display"
     Depth 16
     Modes "1024x768"
     ViewPort 0 0
   EndSubsection
EndSection
*************************************************
and changed "Screen" in the "ServerLayout" section to point to the new
screen, here "myscreen".

If it's not already OK, you will have to link /etc/X11/X to
/usr/X11R6/bin/XFree86 (ln -sf /usr/X11R6/bin/XFree86 /etc/X11/X).

I have also managed to make it work under Xfree86 3.x, by using the
XF86_FBDev server.

1. Xfree86 4.2.0 Configuration on Toshiba Satellite 1800-814 - Cyberblade XP

Hi

I have a toshiba satelltite 1800-814 , I installed Red Hat Linux 7.1, this

time configuring it with Xfree 86 4.1.0, so I
downloaded the the latest version of Xfree 86 i.e. 4.2.0 .....after
installing and configuring it all that I get it a frame buffer display
...which does not look that good, as GNOME or KDE ...any pointers
