2 parter modem and AWE64

Thanks to everyone who answered my posting regarding my winDOZE modem.
I am now in the market for a modem that will work with both WIN98 and Redhat
Linux 6.1  I have not opened my computer yet, but strongly believe I can use
either ISA or PCI (how can I tell, what do each of the "plugs" look like?)
What modems come highly recommended at a reasonable price (prefer 56k).

Secondly, I have a SoundBlaster AWE64 soundcard, that alas is not working
correctly.  I followed the suggestion in a previous posting to run nysysv,
and uncheck sound, then manually configure the modem using sndconfig. When I
scroll through the ntsysv, I do not find the Sound option to uncheck.  I
then run sndconfig, it tells me it can't find the PNP device, and that I can
manually set it.  I give the same info that windows uses, but it does not
work.  When I boot Linux it does give me two (and the only two error
messages I get throughout the whole boot-up process) error messages. 1.)
Something to the effect it is loading the sound module sb.o, then error: the
device or resource is busy. then immediately after 2.) loading MIDI module,
then error: the device or resource is busy.  I have checked my IRQ's in
Linux and found that only 0,1,2,8,12,13,14,15 are in use by
Timer,Keyboard,Cascade,rtc,mouse,fpu,ide0,ide1 respectively.  The only DMA
Linux shows as being in use is 4, for Cascade.  What can I do to get the
soundcard working??

I put Red Hat on my dad's system and it has a US.Robotics 56k not the winmodem
in it and it works great but you will have to set the IRQ before it works.
