Ifconfig says "eth0 Link encap UNSPEC HWaddr 00-00-..."

I just tried installing an NITC EtherPRO III Plus (a cheapie NE2000 clone)
and ran their setup program to configure it for IRQ 9.  It is recognized
at startup by the NEx000 driver, but when I type ifconfig, I get the
following for eth0:

eth0  Link encap UNSPEC  HWaddr 00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00
-00
      (other usual data follows)

What am I doing wrong?  Or is this card just not suitable for Linux?

FYI, the activity light on the end of the card *does* flash when I run
ping, but ping stops pinging after 30 unanswered pings are generated.
And ifconfig doesn't update the TX/RX counters after doing this.

Also, what ether= parameters does the NE2000 driver take?

1. HELP: ifconfig reports hwaddr 00-00-00-00-00...

I run Linux 1.0.9, using a NE*000 card
and ifconfig reports after boot:

eth0 Link encap UNSPEC  HWaddr 00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00

...but /usr/adm/messages tells me:

Sep 24 03:42:24 cotton kernel: NE*000 ethercard probe at 0x300: 00 00 e8 cc 6c 4
Sep 24 03:42:24 cotton kernel: eth0: NE2000 found at 0x300, using IRQ 5.

How is this?

Does this relate in any way to remote PPP's cannot get out into the Net
via this Linux box - proxy arp'ing perhaps not capable of proxi'ing on
behalf of the remote PPP's with no HWADDR to give ?

regards,

walther
