Q: Mysterious permission change on /dev/null. Virus ??

Post by Leo » Tue, 10 Jun 1997 04:00:00

Hi !
Here is a mysterious thing that happens on my RedHat 3.03:
the permission on the /dev/null node keep on changing
from crw-rw-rw- which is i think normal
to crw-rw-rw- which is *very* ennoying, because lots of prgrams can't
start when they redirect stderr...
It seems to me that a process (maybe a * one) does this dirty joke
:)

Any help is welcome.

Leo.

Excuse me. You said changing from crw-rw-rw- to crw-rw-rw-?  What's the
difference? :)

Sorry, can't help.  Never notice that

Execuse-me, you're right , i meant the permissions change from :
crw-rw-rw-   1 root     sys        1,   3 Jan  1  1980 /dev/null
to
crw-------   1 root     sys        1,   3 Jan  1  1980 /dev/null

Is this problem ringing a bell to anyone ?

Or at least if someone has an idea how to track this change...

Thanx

Leo

Hmmm.... that is odd! :-)

Try grepping all the scripts in /etc/... for the string "/dev/null".
This stands a good chance of finding the culprit.

Ummmm....   I don't see any changes a "culprit" would have
made!  The permissions look the same to me!

1. XFree86-4.0.2 changes permissions to /dev/null

Weird thing! Normally /dev/null has permissions 666 and belongs to
root:root. If I login as root, start XFree86-4.0.2, I noticed that
/dev/null permissions change to 600. Consequently, if I reboot, atd
won't start (error redirecting output), and if I login as user, bash
gives some error too. If I change the permissions back to 666 all is
well.

Anyone with the same problem? Any fix?
