ethernet card config

I have a built in ethernet card on my laptop. I have tried everything to
try and configure it under red hat 7.1. When I try commands like "ifconfig
eth0", I just get a message saying command not reconised. Short of
recompiling the kernel or a full reinstall is their anything else I can do?

have you installed the pcmcia tools? you'll need those for accessing a
pcmcia NIC. i can't speak for how it's done with RH - it's been plug-n-play
in Suse for at least the past 2 years.

Try using the command:

/sbin/ifconfig eth0

and see what you get. Unless you are logged in as root, you will find that
the command ifconfig is not in your path, thus you need to give the entire
path to it.

Good Luck!

1. Ethernet card config question

I've just installed a new Ethernet card: a 3Com 509 in my system, and am
having some minor problems.  I'm running a relatively new (6-months old?)
version of Slackware (the exact revision escapes me at this hour).

I've rebuilt the kernel to install 3Com drivers, configured the appropriate
files in /etc/rc.d, and everything seems fine....except that the kernel isn't
testing/initializing/installing the card when it boots.  The failure mode I
see is that eth0 isn't recognized as a valid device by ifconfig.  I know the
card is fine, since Win95 recognized it automatically.

I've studied the HOWTO's for this and don't SEEM to have missed anything. Is
there a subtle (but important ;-) step I've missed?

Thanks,

John.
