Help! Problem of my aic7850 scsi controller

Post by Yiu-leung L » Mon, 20 Nov 1995 04:00:00

I am pretty new to Linux, so I want to ask a relatively simply question.

I got a set of slackware 2.3 CD and tried to install in my PC.
I connected a HD and a cd-rom to Adaptec aic-7850 single-chip host adapter.
When I booted it with a boot disk and root disk, it could detect both my HD
and cd-rom nicely. After that I used 'fdisk' to partition my HD, it told
me that since my HD is larger than 1GB, it may cause trouble. I ignored
this warning and partitioned a linux native area. Then, I tried to format
the new partition under setup menu. Problems occured. It said

aic7xxx_isr:No active SCB for reconnecting target 0,
        channel A-issuing ABORT SAVED_TCL=0x0

        scsi:aborting command due to timeout:pid 23,scsi 0, channel 0,
        id 0,lun 0 write(6) 16d100f400

        aic7xxx:target 0 underflow-wanted (at least) 124928 got 120832
        count=31

I am not quite sure what do the above warnings really mean. If any person
had encountered and solved the same problem, please advise.

I too had this messages and they vanished after i turned the
option 'enable disconnection' in the SCSI-Setup off (for my
Harddisk)
Anyway, after that it still gave me problems. After formatting,
i get a never ending list of messages like:
No command for scb:0 ... or something :(

  Hi.
The problem is that the AIC-7850 is not supported yet.  It is a de-featured
version of the AIC-7870 that is used in the 2940 and 3940, and there is
something on the chip that doesn't work quite right.  There is a mailing list
that discusses this family of Adaptec controllers, but I don't have the info
on subscribing to it handy right now.  Anyway, there should be a driver for
this chip soon, it is being worked on.
