Help RH5.0 install won't mount CDROM drive

Post by V.R. Prabh » Wed, 04 Mar 1998 04:00:00

I'm taking my first steps in the worls of Linux and I've already hit a snag.
Basically the RH5.0 install progresses to the point where it asks my
installation method.  I select local CDROM drive and choose ncr53c8xx (I have a
Diamond Fireport 40) and elect to autoprobe.  The installation script scans the
SCSI bus, *appears* to find the CDROM drive and starts to initialise it.
However, it then states that it can't mount the CDROM drive because it is not a
block device.  I previously managed fine with the same SCSI card and a Plextor
12/20 CDROM drive.  Can anyone shed some light on this?

My details are:
Asus TX97-E motherboard
Intel Pentium 200 MMX CPU oc'ed to 225 (75x3)
64 MB SDRAM

Diamond Fireport 40 UWSCSI card
IBM Ultrastar 2ES 4.33 GB UWSCSI
Plextor Ultraplex 32x CDROM drive USCSI (block jumper is currently set)

The SCSI bus is set up as follows:
HDD: Device 0
     Termination on
     Bus width 16 bit
     Sync data transfer 40 Mb/s
     Disconnect on
     Parity on
     Scan for LUNs off
     Timeout 10s

CDROM: Device 1
       Termination on
       Bus width 16bit
       Sync data transfer 20 Mb/s
       Disconnect on
       Parity on
       Scan for LUNs off
       Timeout 10s

Fireport: Device 7

I've also got the following expansion cards:
Diamond Stealth II S220
SBAWE 32 soundcard
Yamaha SW60XG MIDI card

Cheers.

Nice system.  Too bad none of those details are pertinent.  (But, if you
knew what was, we wouldn't be having this conversation; in this case,
the details are the answer.)

I've no idea *why* you have the problem, but the 'not a block device'
refers to the mount command arguments themselves, or more specifically,
the block device argument.  Whatever RH5.0 is trying to mount is
apparently the wrong file type.  Making a quick guess, I'd say it's due
to the symbolic link /dev/cdrom not being set to /dev/sr0 (it's your
first SCSI CDROM on the chain, right?).

Do an 'ls -l /dev/cdrom'; if it returns an error, then do an 'ln -s
/dev/sr0 /dev/cdrom'.  Otherwise you might need to delete whatever's
there first.

If it's correct, it'll most likely look something like
    lrwxrwxrwx  1 root   root    0  Mar  2 18:24 /dev/cdrom -> /dev/sr0
(though the date, the spacing, the file ownership, and file permissions
may vary.)

In the case that it's correct, do an 'ls -l /dev/sr0'; I'd bet that
either /dev/cdrom isn't right, or /dev/sr0 doesn't exist.  I can't
remember off the top of my head the major for /dev/sr0; I don't know if
RedHat's MAKEDEV will make the SCSI CDROM devices or not.  (I'm under
the impression that it's major 11, minor 0 (that is, 'mknod /dev/sr0 b
11 0'), but I'm not certain.)

1. Burn RH5.2 RPMs to CDROM, install will not mount CDROM

Hi all,

This is the first time I downloaded the RPMS and other stuff instead of
buying the Redhat CD.

I burn the CD with the 5.2 RPMs, base and instimag (in the proper dirs),
but when I install using boot diskette it cannot detect my CDROM.. I put
in RH5.1... no problem.... (I hate going through the upgrade.. want to
put it on a lot of machines.. getting ride of win32 toys)

What's the deal.  Why can't you burn the CD and go through like a HD
install?

Also.. Tried the SMB via win98 and NE2000 can't see the Host
(SAMBA/win98 problem?).

stumped ',;-/
