Common error 135 when recompling kernel

Hi there,
I and a friend of mine are experiencing problems while
trying to recompile the linux kernel on our PCs.

The funny thing is that machines and config files are quite
different, but we both get the same error (error 135):

after following the instrucions (make mrproper, update of the
symlinks) and configured the kernel (with make config, menuconfig
or xconfig, I tried all three) the command
  make dep
exits with error 135:

make[2]: entering directory '/usr/src/linux-2.0.34/drivers/scsi'
gcc -O ..... (scusate ma essendo senza rete ricopio solo le parti\
che credo essenziali per la descrizione dell'errore) ....\
  scsi_syms.c | /sbin/genksyms /usr/src/linux-2.0.34/include/linu\
  x/modules
updating /usr/src/linux-2.0.34/include/linux/modeversions.h
if [ -n "53c7,8xx.c 53c7,8xx.h ... (seguono una sfilza di file .c\
e .h con nomi di controller scsi, compresi BusLogic.c,\
  BusLogic.h, FlashPoint.c ) ... wd7000.h" ]; then \
/usr/src/linux-2.0.34/scripts/mkdep *.[chS] > .depend; fi
make[2]: *** [fastdep] Error 135
make[2]: Leaving directory '/usr/src/linux-2.0.34/drivers/scsi'
make[1]: *** [fastdep] Error 2
make[1]: Leaving directory '/usr/src/linux-2.0.34/drivers'
make: *** [dep-files] Error 2

I'm trying to compile v.2.0.34 on a Cyrix P166+ box, Buslogic
FlashPoint SCSI controller, with RedHat 5.1, my friend tries
v.2.0.32 on a Intel 486dx2/66 with RH5.0.

The config file for the kernel is identical to that I used some
time ago on the same box, to compile 2.0.32 on RH4.1.

The file /usr/src/linux-2.0.34/drivers/scsi/.depend contains lots
of entries like (of course I did select only Buslogic SCSI
controller with Flashpoint support):

controllername.o: \
  /usr/src/linux-2.0.34/include/.../nomefile1.h \
  /usr/src/linux-2.0.34/include/.../nomefile2.h \
  ...
  /usr/src/linux-2.0.34/include/.../nomefileN.h \
  nomefile.c
controllername.h: \
  /usr/src/linux-2.0.34/include/.../nomefile1.h \
  /usr/src/linux-2.0.34/include/.../nomefile2.h \
  ...
  /usr/src/linux-2.0.34/include/.../nomefileN.h

The file finishes abruptly with this entry:

eata.o:
  /usr/src/linux-2.0.34/include/.../nomefile1.h \
  /usr/src/linux-2.0.34/include/.../nomefile2.h \
  ...
  /usr/src/linux-2.0.34/include/.../nomefileN.h \
  scsi.h \
  hosts.h \
  sd.h \
  /usr/src/linux-2.0.34/include/asm/dma.h \
  /usr/src/linux-2.0.34/include/asm/irq.h \
  eata.h \
  /usr/src/linux-2.0.

Yep, just "/usr/src/linux-2.0." and nothing else.
The file is 12228 bytes long and there are over 500MB free space
on the fs.

Someone knows what's wrong? or does someone knows where I can find
documentation on the mysterious "Error 135"?

TIA,
        Oly

PS: please post the answer to me directly, not only to the ng.
