Hi,
I have a Matrox G400 AGP video card and am interested in using the frame
buffer device. I have read the Framebuffer-HOWTO but the section on the
X-Server doesn't cover XFree86 v4. If I am to use the frame buffer, I
would like to do so *exclusively* using the kernel's built-in hardware
support for the Matrox G400 to avoid potential low-level conflicts
between Linux and X.
Has anyone configured their Linux box this way? How fast is the
X-server? The kernel does claim to support "acceleration", but how good
is it compared to X's? Also, how stable is everything because I have
heard tales of hard lock-ups when switching between X and virtual
consoles?
I am assuming that XFree86 + the fbdev driver + the kernel's
"matroxfb_accel.o" module is functionally equivalent to XFree86 + the
mga driver. Is this true? After all, an unaccelerated X-server would be
no fun at all ... :-)
Thanks in advance for any information,
Cheers.
Chris
