HP LaserJet 4L

I am having some weird problems setting up my HP 4L.
I've read and followed the directions in the Printing-HOWTO, but I'm
still not  getting any results.  basically  cat file >/dev/lp1 prints
blank pages.  lpc shows printing and queuing enabled but no daemon
present.  However, /usr/sbin/lpd is a running process.   Trying to
print using lpr gives no errors, but the files just build up in the
queue and never get printed.     Any suggestions/Hints?

I've got a similar problem, with no replies to my posts. Help on getting the
daemon to work would be greatly appreciated.

The permissions may be the problem.

        Mail me:
         output from
                ls -l /dev/lp*
                ls -l /usr/sbin lp*
                ls -l /var
                ls -l /var/spool
                ls -l /var/spool/lp1
                cat   /var/log/messages
                cat   /var/log/syslog
                cat   /etc/printcap

NO. The LJ4 is only a 300bpi printer.

It can do something that looks like 600 bpi, *only if you use the
builtin fonts*, and *only for text* (not for images), using something HP
calls "resolution enhancement", which does not work with downloaded
fonts (at least, not with the freely available ones - don't know about
the ones HP sells).

I have the exact same problem. Using the settings below, I was able to get
lpd to print from the queue but it doesn't print the documents, it just
prints a single blank page.

Also, in the filter file is there a substitution for the ^M or am I really
supposed to type a ^ and an M ?? I thought there was a command key for
this but I can't figure it out. I use joe to edit.

Try using magicfilter.  It works great with the HP Laserjet 4L.  It fixes the
staircase problem and prints out postscript documents for you automatically.

Just do a Alta Vista search to find the most recent version of magicfilter.
