loadlin.exe error / kernel error

Post by Boiling Madnes » Wed, 21 Apr 1999 04:00:00

I use loadlin.exe to boot linux with the command line:

\linux\boot\loadlin.exe vmlinuz root=/dev/hda2 rw

my HDD for Linux is the second partition on my 6.5GB HDD.

The following screen is displayed after is execute the above command:
____________________________________________________________

LOADING.....................................................................
...........................................
.......................................................................
not an image file,
Please enter name of kernel image file followed by optional
command line parameters, for Linux e.g. root=XXXX

____________________________________________________________

I have made sure the vmlinuz is in the same dir as specified, anyway, the
size of vmlinuz is 504,357 bytes. I don't know the version of the vmlinuz
kernel, since I cannot go anywhere from the above screen.

P.S. The distribution I am using is DragonLinux v0.7 downloaded from
www.dragonlinux.nu

Thanks in Advance!

Well, I don't exactly know what the problems are, but I will try to make
some remarks that might be helpfull.

First, the fact that linux is on your second partition, doesn't necesserally
mean that root=/dev/hda2. That's because your second partition is probably
divided into more logical partitions. In my case (RH5.2) root =/dev/hda7 ro.
Second, don't you have to specify the full path for vmlinuz
(c:\linux\boot\vmlinuz or whatever it is)?

I startup with c:\loadlin\loadlin c:\loadlin\vmlinuz root=/dev/hda7 ro
and it works fine. But of course, there are many configurations possible.

1. Using loadlin.exe with Win98?

I have searched for a answer on this but could not find one (I do not
use LILO).

I plan to get a new PC with Win98, and all FAT32 partitions.

One of the partitions will be converted for Linux use (ext2),
but C: will be FAT32.

Will loadlin.exe be able to boot into linux under this scenario?
I read in many places that if C: is FAT32, other OSes like WinNT
and Linux cannot be booted.
Does this only apply to booting on power-on?
I am not looking for that - I'll boot into Windows first, then
Exit to Dos (does Win98 have this feature or is it like NT and
cannot Exit to Dos?), and once in DOS, I run loadlin.exe.

This is the process I follow on my current Win95 PC, and would like
to continue this on Win98, and also make use of FAT32.

Is this doable?

Thanks for any info!
