ATAPI CD-ROM - SOLUTION FOUND!

Post by Steve Childres » Thu, 07 Sep 1995 04:00:00

In the continuing saga, going for several days and many frustrating hours whilst I built
kernels and generally fumbled in confusion, being a Linux newbie...

Two kind souls out there in newsland today pointed out that the current IDE/ATAPI drivers in
Linux are unable to interface to a drive jumpered as a SLAVE device connected as the first
and perhaps only drive on the second IDE chain.

So, I moved the jumper and booted for the ba-zillionth time.

!!!!!WAH-LAH!!!!!!! Mounted, worked. Guess I'm not as stupid as I thought I was.

Gosh, everyone *knows* about the MASTER/SLAVE thang.

So, Linux gurus, please make this prominent in the FAQs, which I had scanned at length.

-----
So, now I am off to loading Infomagic's stuff.
Looking for a good window manager - I use X/Motif at work.
Recommendations? Looking for something a bit, er, more sophisticated than fvwm.

Thanks again to the net'ers for the jumper help.

regards,

It is "prominent", in the README.ide file that came with your kernel.

'Bet you didn't read it, did you!

I am a newbie, and it is worse. I tried to recompile, and it choked. The
zdisk just gave register values over and over, like DX=100 CX=100. So I
didn't install it and am running old kernel. I have Slakware 2.3 and the
kernel is 1.2.1. on 486 DX2-66, 850 IDE drive, VLB IDE controller, and CL

I tried this and my system hangs. The hd is set as master. There is a
neutral switch, and I guess I should try that, and set CD to master.
<huh?!>

I got the Infomagic and Linux Unleashed. I gave up on InfoMagic, but
today I read slams on the Unleashed CD. Does anyone have a definitive
answer, other than G-d Himself?

Help, I am loosing too much sleep and I am always late to work.

THANKS

Thanks for the info.  But I missed the original posts and I'm confused.  What
exactly couldn't you do?  If I understand this, you had the CD cabled as the
first drive on a secondary IDE controller, but had it jumpered as a slave.
And Linux choked on that.  Is that correct?

ATAPI CD-ROM - SOLUTION FOUND!

Post by Steve Childres » Fri, 08 Sep 1995 04:00:00

Originally, I could not get my hand built kernel nor any of the slackware CD
kernels to identify my CD-ROM drive, so I could not mount it. There were misleading
error messages such as "ISO9660 support not in kernel" when indeed the problem
was that the CD-ROM was not mounted - this led me askew for hours.

The problem is that the current IDE drivers apparently insist on detecting the drive
during booting and cannot "see" an ATAPI CD-ROM which is jumpered for SLAVE mode
and connected to IDE chain #2.

Supposedly this is mentioned in readme.ide.
I did a find on readme.ide for the entire disk #1 of slackware.
Someone said the SLAVE jumper gotcha is there.
Did not find a readme.ide.
Must be buried in a tar file somewhere.

System hang....

1. I am using a kernel built by saying yes to make config's queries about ATAPI CD-ROM.
I am fairy certain that this is essentially the same kernel as is idecd on the slackware CD.

2. The CD-ROM is jumpered as MASTER and connected to the 2nd IDE chain; my motherboard
has two IDE chains. I wondered if your system has but one - if so, HD is master, CD
must be, er, I don't know.

Here's a hint:
IDE devices have 3 possible modes :
Single Drive ( Master , no slave present)
Slave ( 2nd drive, master present)
Master ( 1st, drive, slave present )
RTFM for your hard drive and ATAPI CD, this should help..

ATAPI CD-ROM - SOLUTION FOUND!

Just a little note here, I have the Linux Universe, live file system
cd, and after booting with loadlin for the installation, and then
BootBlock to boot to the partition, it recognized my ACER ATAPI
cd-rom, jumpered as slave on the second controller just fine. however
Slackware wouldn't see the drive at all, jumpered as master even.
(June infomagic), but not to fear, I have the new infomagic winging
it's way to me this week, so I should be able to do a full install...

So what is the solution?

1. ATAPI CD-ROM - SOLUTION FOUND! NOT

I've never been able to get linux (or Windoze NT for that matter) to read
the files from a cdrom connected to the second IDE controller.  It knows
the drive is out there but reports no cdrom present when trying to read from
the ROM.  This has happened on numerous Pentium machines.

And today, I have a situation where an Intel Zappa Mboard Pentium can't load
Linux from a Sony 55E that's on the same primary controller (slave of course).
Two machines have the same problem.  I called Intel and the response was that
they don't support Linux...

2. I finally installed apache 2.0.35. But can not run it

3. IDE/ATAPI CD-ROM and Que/CD-ROM setup

4. Store installation

5. Can't find Atapi CD-ROM

6. Which distribution for Oracle?

7. Finally got ATAPI ZIP working with ATAPI CD-ROM

8. Website Attack

9. New IDE-CD/extended IDE driver supports Sony 55E ATAPI CD-ROM!

10. atapi cd-rom and CD-Roast

11. problem reading cd - sco install using ATAPI cd-rom drive

12. SB16 PnP ATAPI CD-ROM: play audio CDs?

13. replace cd-rom with CD-R / can't find mount CD-R drive
