Error Message: Kernel panic: VFS Unable to mount root fs on 08:01

I am trying to install Slackware from a CD using loadlin and basic.I.
I have two 3.5 inch floppy drives;   I have a hard drive with a
primary Dos partition that is active. this PC will be used for Linux
and nothing else. Following the instructions. I created a directory on
the hard disk  and placed loadlin and basic.I in the directory. I then
placed the root disk (Basic.I) expanded to a floppy using Rawrite in
my B: or fd1 drive. I booted off a dos floppy went to the the C
directory and launched loadlin. It asked me what image file to use and
I told it Zimage. Loadlin then took off and stopped and this message,

VFS:  Cannot open root device 08:01
Kernel panic: VFS Unable to mount root fs on 08:01

What does this mean and what can I do about it?
Thanks

I've gotten the same thing trying to install Red Hat on one of my systems.
The boot disk works fine on another system.  It seems to mean that the
system doesn't like you very well.  :-/

It's interesting to know that it happens with Slackware as well.  I used
to run an older Slackware on the system that's now giving me trouble!
