ATI Mach64 CT problem with XFree86....

Post by J. She » Tue, 27 Aug 1996 04:00:00

Hello,

I am using an ATI Graphics Xpression vedio card, with 2MB DRAM.
And I check my card.  There is a Mach64 chip on it.(CT version)
I am running the 2.0.14 kernel.  When I am installing the X
windows with "xf86config" and "startx",  the Linux should tell me that I
only have 64K RAM!!!  As a result, I cannot get into the X-windows.  Even
the "ctrl-alt-BS" doesn't work.  I need to shutdown my PC from another PC
telnet-ing back!
I read the HOWTO and know there maybe some problem of the
Mach64 CT version with XFree86 3.1.2.  Would you mind tell me what's going
on with the situation and where to get XFree86 3.1.2 B or D,E?  I cannot
find it in www.XFree86.org!  Thank you very much.

ftp://ftp.xfree86.org/pub/XFree86/3.1.2E/Linux/Elf
is where you'll find the latest binary, although this binary expires
*REAL* soon (like at the end of this week, I think).  There will be
a new version (3.1.2F or 3.2.0) by then.

There is a mach64 server for recent xfree betas (3.1.2E), get that one
and try it.

You get it at:

ftp://ftp.xfree86.org/pub/XFree86

The site will be very busy the next week because version 3.1.2E is about
to expire (Aug. 31, 1996).

1. 16bpp problems on ATI-CT Mach64 card.

Folks: Here is my problem. I use the AfterStep window manager. While it
be very nice and all, it is a color hog. I have an ATI_CT Mach64 card
and I know that in Windows 95, I can use it at 16bpp and 1024x768 mode.
The Mach64 X Server (version 3.2 XFRee86) defaults to 8bpp. So, to
choose 16bpp, I went to the Xservers file in /usr/X11/lib/X11/xdm and
changed the way I invoke X from just plain X to X -bpp 16. When I do
this, the best resolution I can get is 800x600 in 16bpp mode. Why is it
that I can get the high resolution and 16bpp in Windows 95 but not in X?
Here is the output from SuperProbe on my box.

First video: Super-VGA
        Chipset: ATI 264CT (Port Probed)
        Memory:  2048 Kbytes
        RAMDAC:  ATI Mach64 integrated 15/16/24/32-bit DAC w/clock
(with 6-bit wide lookup tables (or in 6-bit mode))
(programmable for 6/8-bit wide lookup tables)
        Attached graphics coprocessor:
                Chipset: ATI Mach64
                Memory:  2048 Kbytes

Any helpful suggestions? I will summarize responses to the group.

TIA
