Slackware setup fails, CD scans & locks

Post by Kirk Anderso » Fri, 06 Jun 1997 04:00:00

I have just attempted to install Slackware 96 last night, but failed
to be able to do so from the provided CD media.  After performing a
source select for a "General IDE/ATAPI" drive, the setup program
successfully spins up the CR-ROM and mounts it to /dev/hdc.

After selecting the programs to install, and attempting to commence
with a full installation, the CD fails to spin.  In fact, the drawer
won't even open until I reboot Win95.

The CD in question is a Mitsumi IDE 12x drive.  While the setup does
indicate a choice for Mitsumi drives (suggesting a proprietary non-IDE
interface), that selection fails to scan & mount.  The boot & root disks
used contained the BARE.I and COLOR.GZ contents.  I don't yet know if
other alternatives may contain the drivers needed or not.

Thanks in advance,

Hi, Kirk!
I noticed that no one seems to have responded, so I thought I'd give
it a shot.
I know this message is quite old (I see it from 6/5), but what the
hell. I'll take a stab at it.
One thing you might check is weither or not the CDROM is master or
slave on the IDE interface.
I have the same device, and it has worked flawlessly since I got it,
so I *know* it will work.
Check the jumpers and determine if it is slave or not. It *must* be
slave for Slackware to find it.
Once you have done that, you should be good to go.

Let me know if this works or not.

P.S. - remove the "X"'s to reply to me.

1. Tystar H & V Scan rates for Use with Slackware

I have a Tystar Model TY-3438 Color monitor. I am wanting to set up X-windows
from Slack Ware and do not have the owners manual for the monitor. The
Slackware has a waring about using the correct scan rates. Does anyone  how
the scan rate for this monitor or  a safe scan rate that I could use to test
the monitor ?  Thanks in advance for the help.
