I am having problems printing to my printer here should be the relevent info

crw-r-----   1 root     daemon     6,   0 Apr 27  1995 /dev/lp0
crw-r-----   1 root     daemon     6,   1 Apr 27  1995 /dev/lp1
crw-r-----   1 root     daemon     6,   2 Apr 27  1995 /dev/lp2

from /etc/printcap

# Generic printer:
lp:lp=/dev/lp1:sd=/usr/spool/lp1:sh

if I do a
cat file1 >> /dev/lp0   (or lp1 or lp2)

I get the following error...
no such device

lp0 used to work before I updated my kernel, but I never saw anything about
lp printers in the config setup for my linux kernel
(was slackware 3.1 kernel 2.0.0 updated not via patch to 2.0.16)

I often get the error "waiting for printer to become ready (ofline?)

Character devices, whether or not it says CONFIG_PRINTER=y.  If it says
CONFIG_PRINTER is not set, then you need to
Look at the file /usr/src/linux/.config, and see, down near the end under
Character devices, whether or not it says CONFIG_PRINTER=y.  If it says
CONFIG_PRINTER is not set, then you need to go back and run make config
in /usr/src/linux again, followed by the rest of the kernel building and
installing process.

You can also run dmesg, and look for the kernel's recognition of the
printer port at boot time.  Here is the little section of the output
on my machine:

Checking 'hlt' instruction... Ok.

This is the relevant part, I think.
