There is no "Unix".  The word refers to a whole class of related OSes
with similar characteristics of which Linux is one.  Solaris, AIX,
FreeBSD, and Irix are other examples of operating systems commonly
referred to as "Unix".

Many "Unix" programs are distributed in source form and will compile
and run on all of the above platforms.  Some will not, depending on
whether or not they were written to use OS-specific features.

Compiled (binary) programs for one of the above OSes generally won't
run on the others.

    OS/2 + Linux (Slackware+RedHat+SuSE) + FreeBSD + Solaris + BeOS +
    WinNT4 + Win95 + PC/GEOS + MacOS + Executor = PC Hobbyist Heaven!
              Jack & Jill...pail of water???.....Riiiight!

Well, this story on News.com indicates otherwise: of the migrations,
24% were from Unix, but 31% were from Windows. Sounds promising."
