Routing problem with PPP - need help fast!

Post by d.. » Tue, 08 Apr 1997 04:00:00

I just installed 2.0.29. I used the default PPP scripts (ppp-on and
ppp-on-dialer or whatever) , and just changed the obvious information.
However, I am not able to do anything with the connection.

I connect and log into the server OK, I get an IP address, and the
"route -n" command shows the gateway, but I am unable to get out at
all.  I am not sure if it is related to DNS or not, once or twice I
_think_ I was able to ping with an IP number. I am positive my
resolv.conf is set up right.

Another thing that confuses me is that I cannot telnet to myself with
my assigned IP. So I am supposing that I am not getting to the gateway
at all. Telnetting to the loopback does work.

I have run "netconfig" about a hundred times, and tried many different
settings. I use 0.0.0.0 for the IP (I am dynamic) and I have tried
0.0.0.0 and various gateway addresses on my IP for the gateway
setting, but nothing seems to work.

I also tried dialing in with minicom, and starting pppd myself, but I
coudln't even negotiate an IP.

This is the 6th or 7th install w/tcp/ip I have done, so I am not
_quite_ a beginner, but this is the first time I have had trouble for
this long.

I have been having mail server problems with NT, so I installed linux
to hopefully simplify it. So I need this working soon!

I appreciate any help...

1. need help: ppp and routing problems

1) My Linux server is attached to an ethernet segment which is attached to
our corporate WAN via a router and a T1. From the Linux box I can telnet
to other hosts on the corporate WAN without problems.

2) I can establish a PPP link from my PC at home to the Linux box. I dial
in with a comm program, then do a "pppd -detach proxyarp :xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx"
(My desired IP # at home inserted, of course.) I can then telnet into my
Linux box from home.

OK - so now the problem. I cannot see any host on the corporate WAN from
home. WHY?
"netstat -r" shows that I have a default route set up to to router, I
used the proxyarp option which should be routing my packets to the
gateway, right? But its not! I must've missed something! Thanks in advance
for suggestions!
