winmodems and wine

Post by Christophe MICHE » Thu, 28 Jan 1999 04:00:00

hello world
---------------

I know that these suckin' winmodems are not usable under linux and this
makes me sad, I feel like  I've been crooked by 3com when buyin' mine......

    Today's questions are the following:

1) is there really no way to use window's winmodem drivers under linux (I
don't know how but code exists under windows, linux must be able to run it
in any way)

2) challenge: write linux drivers for these modems (i am not a programmer,
therefore i don't know how to do) in order to use them with linux

3) and what about 'Wine' has anyone succeeded in running winmodem using
wine???? I personally never tried but why not??

any comments welcome

These modem drivers are written with the M$ COM and TELEPHONY
API's, along with the device driver SDK. In order to do what you
want, you'll have to write the underpinnings for those API's
(which is a BIG task). The RPI chip also has an API, and YOU
guess it! The API is only for windoz. Some of the winmodems out
there also use MS's CoDec (compression) functions, so we are
hosed for now!  Now comes the tough stuff, the signal processing
on these, pieces of crap, are all done in software with
propriparity protocols such as the MNP suite.

The differences between winmodems and standard modems are so fundamental I
doubt you will see any Linux drivers or compatability drivers for a long time,
if ever. Winmodems rely on the OS and CPU (read: Windows and your friendly
Pentium) to some of the work the conventional modem hardware does.

Get an external modem. That way, you know exactly what you have and what
resources are being devoted to it.

1. Wine,wine,wine - I need help with wine

Help
I down loaded and installed Wine to Linux 2.0.22 and Xwindows (XFree).
I think it's installed correctly.  I am getting a 'drive not found/path
not found' error.  I have my wine.conf in the right place (I think).
I'm using Win95 and hda3 and Linux on hda1.  I need a reality check.  Is
it hard to set up Wine?  Does someone have a working wine.conf file that
might guide me to a working wine.   Wine, wine, wine and beer. Ok I'll
stop wineing

Thanks
George
